Birding: May 2026

May was migration month and boy were the birds out in force! We luckily had the time to sneak out in the mornings for Early Morning Birders at Minnewaska State Park and a trip to Mohonk Preserve to see all the warblers making their way north. Our little Ruby-Throated Hummingbird has found his way back to our back deck too, which filled me with a lot of joy.

Two new lifers this month: The Cerulean Warbler and the Olive-Sided Flycatcher

New lifer: Cerulean Warbler

New lifer: Olive-Sided Flycatcher

Just when we were finishing for the day, one of our early morning birder friends noticed this Flycatcher out in the distance. There was a bunch of back and forth if it was that or a Phoebe, but me and a fellow photographer were able to provide a closer look and we were excited to identify a rare sight this time of year (and add a new lifer to my book).
