Birding: September 2025

September found us joining our Early Morning Birding friends at Minnewaska for another outing, but sadly it wasn’t super eventful. There was one exception: a new lifer, the broad-winged hawk. It’s hawk migration season and apparently these hawks have been very active in the area. Our birding leader reported 500+ hawks just the weekend prior. Amazing!

We took a small walk to the Nyquist-Harcourt Wildlife Sanctuary for the first time in a summer month. What activity there was was very spread out, and a lot of plant growth meant we didn’t see much. We did spot a bunch of herons out in the river.

Most of the activity this month was in the yard! We had a huge invasion of grackles one of the weekends—there had to have been 50+ birds, giving me big The Birds energy, haha. We bade farewell to our favorite little hummingbirds, but the tufted titmouse is starting to be more visible (rather than hidden in the woods), and various woodpeckers joined in the fun of scavenging for food.
