Short-Eared Owls: December 2025

With the cold winter months coming back, so are a lot of birds that love the winter weather. One that we discovered back in February were the Short-Eared Owls that frequent the Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge here in the Hudson Valley. With a break in the bitter cold, we decided to head back and try our luck catching them again. We indeed lucked out catching a few owls as well as a Northern Harrier who was keen on stealing a meal or two.

Even with the telephoto lens, they were a bit far out usually tracing the edges of the grasslands. One of the big differences from our previous trip to this one was how early the sun set. So I was cranking the ISO and hoping Lightroom’s denoise feature would do a lot of the heavy lifting to make these (thankfully) usable.

Already looking forward to making a trip back again. It was great to meet so many fellow photographers and even some of our friends we made birding this year.
